PS5 vs Xbox Series X When You Only Buy 3-4 Games a Year

Compared by Kath · 10/29/2026

HMMMM SAYS

PS5 wins on year-one cost, but Game Pass wins if you binge

I'd go with the PS5 Slim disc edition. Under this exact condition the whole thing is arithmetic: $649.99 console (Sony, effective April 2, 2026) plus PS Plus Essential at $79.99/yr plus four games at $69.99 lands near $1,010. Xbox Series X disc is $799.99 (effective Aug 1, 2026) plus Game Pass Ultimate at $275.88/yr = $1,075.87 before you buy anything — and that Ultimate bill repeats every single year. Pick the Xbox instead if your "3-4 games" are Xbox-published day-one titles, since only Ultimate includes those, or if you own stacks of Xbox 360 and Xbox One discs that Series X still plays.

🥇Rank 1

PlayStation 5 (Slim, disc)

8.1out of 10

What's good

  • ✓Costs $150 less than Series X in hardware alone: $649.99 disc PS5 per Sony's PlayStation Blog (effective April 2, 2026) versus $799.99 for Series X disc (effective Aug 1, 2026).
  • ✓You can stop at PS Plus Essential, $79.99/yr per PlayStation.com, if you just want multiplayer — $195.89/yr less than the $275.88 Game Pass Ultimate that Xbox day-one access requires.
  • ✓Named PS Store sales land every 6-8 weeks per PlatPrices, with Black Friday from Nov 21 cutting first-party titles 50-60% — real money off when you only buy 3-4 games.

Watch out for

  • ✗No PS Plus tier includes day-one first-party games: Sony VP Nick Maguire told TechRadar only 4-5 day-one indies arrive yearly, with Sony titles 12-18 months late (per TechRadar).
  • ✗Your 3-4 games are mostly full price: 84.0% of AAA releases sit at $69.99 per VoxBooster, so four purchases add roughly $280 on top of the $649.99 console.
  • ✗Disc library stops at two generations — Sony states "PS5 consoles do not support PlayStation 3 discs," covering only the 4,000+ PS4 titles (PlayStation Support).

Xbox Series X

7.2out of 10

What's good

  • ✓Game Pass Ultimate is the only tier with "New games on day one" per Xbox.com, so 3-4 day-one Xbox titles cost $275.88/yr instead of roughly $280 at $69.99 each (VoxBooster).
  • ✓Ultimate got cheaper: $22.99/month, down from $29.99 as of April 21, 2026 per Xbox Wire — a $84.12 annual saving, and it bundles EA Play, Fortnite Crew and Ubisoft+ Classics.
  • ✓Plays three prior generations — original Xbox, Xbox 360 and Xbox One — with FPS Boost, 4K and Auto HDR on "thousands" of titles per Xbox.com, free content if you kept your discs.

Watch out for

  • ✗Hardware jumped $150, a 23% rise, from $649.99 to $799.99 on Aug 1, 2026 (Pure Xbox reporting Xbox Wire) — and the 2TB $799 model was discontinued outright.
  • ✗Year one is $1,075.87 ($799.99 + $275.88 Ultimate) before a single purchase, and Microsoft expects storage and memory costs to double again by fall 2027 (Microsoft via Pure Xbox).
  • ✗Exclusivity is thinning: Halo: Campaign Evolved launched on PS5 July 28, 2026 per Sony's own blog, leaving Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution as the console exclusives (GameRant).
